Thomas Berry, ’88, has published his latest historical novel, “Fire and Ash,” the last installment in the “Gifts of the Gods” trilogy on Ancient Greece. The novel follows the lives of five men and women during the last decade of the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta in the 5th century B.C.  Berry’s first two volumes, “Iron and Bronze” and “Silver and Gold,” were critically acclaimed novels in 2018 and 2019, respectively.

“The ‘Gifts of the Gods’ trilogy combines intriguing historical content with a down-to-earth human connection so often lost in textbooks,” Berry said. “Yet we continue to find new parallels with our modern society, such as the rise of democracy and socialism that had its origins in Athens and Sparta.”

While mighty Athens struggles to rebuild after a devastating campaign abroad, the feared warriors of Sparta prepare to deliver the final blow in a decades-long war. No one is safe as the conflict shifts across the Aegean to the shores of wealthy Persia. Old colonies, once loyal to Athens, are eager to rebel and the Great King is willing to pay anything to regain his control over them.
